Clarifying Common Mistakes Widespread Among The Muslims

27. Raising the hands at the time of sujood (prostration) or raising the hands from the position of sujood.

This is in oppostion to the well-known Sunnah which has been narrated by most of the Companions who narrated which position the hands should be raised to. It is befitting to adhere to the well-known Sunnah except in the case when the students of knowledge are alone with each other. In this case, he can do what he deems most correct from the Sunnah which the general viewpoint of the scholar opposes. But as for when he is in front of the people, he should do what is well-known, known from the Sunnah, which most of the scholars are upon.

The wel-known Sunnah which must be adhered to is that there are four places where the hands are raised:

1. At the opening takbeer

2. When bowing for rukoo’

3. After raising from rukoo’

4. After standing for the third rak’ah

Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said:

“The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ used to raise his hands to shoulder level when he started to pray, when he said ‘Allaahu Akbar’ before bowing in rukoo’, and when he raised his head from rukoo'”.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 735, Sahih Muslim 390)

In another narration, it states:

“But he did not do that when he prostated of when he raised his head from prostration.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 876)

In a narration collected by Muslim, he said:

“But he did not do it at time of raising his head from prostration.”

(Sahih Muslim 390)

And Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said:

“When the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ stood at the end of two raka’at, he uttered the takbeer (‘Allah is the Greatest’) and raised his hands.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud 743)
